Corporate Profile

Since March 2001, Athens International Airport has been offering high-level services, having earned the trust of airlines, passengers, partners, and stakeholders. Having welcomed throughout this period more than 370 million passengers and over 4 million flights, the airport keeps creating significant value for the national, regional & local economy, its shareholders, all stakeholders, and the wider public, continuously seeking to enhance the connectivity of Athens, as a city-break, year-round sustainable destination.

In terms of traffic, the year 2023 ended with Athens International Airport’s traffic amounting to 28.17 million passengers, exceeding the 2022 levels by 24% and higher than the respective 2019 levels by 10.2%. At the same time, Athens International Airport connected travelers from over 155 destinations in 55 countries, on more than 65 airlines.

Key contributors to this positive outlook remain the Airport Company’s (AIA) renowned route development and airline marketing strategy, with one of the most comprehensive and innovative airline incentive schemes internationally and a strategic focus on the promotion of “Destination Athens” through initiatives and synergies. Having repeatedly been awarded by the Airports Council International as Best Airport in Europe in terms of service quality and passenger satisfaction, AIA continues, during 2024, its investment program of aesthetic, functional, and operational enhancements at its premises.

Since 2016, Athens International Airport is the 1st Carbon Neutral airport in Greece and, as of 2019, through its initiative “Route 2025,” AIA announced its official commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2025, 25 years ahead of the target of 2050 set by ACI Europe.

Thanks to the airport’s top-notch services, AIA has earned more than 120 significant international distinctions and awards. The airport community, with more than 426 companies and 17,000 employees, constitutes one of the biggest “employment engines” in Greece, generating growth, jobs, and value.

Athens airport is a company listed on the Athens Stock Exchange as of February 2024.

The curbside access and traffic control project at Athens Airport’s departures and arrivals

Improving the drop-off and pick-up experience

The improved set up of the curbside access and traffic control system was implemented in June 2023. The project was designed with a key focus on safety, and on the orderly, environmentally and socially responsible use of the road sections exclusively intended for passenger pick-up/drop-off at the Arrivals and Departures levels.

With the aim of avoiding congestion and illegal parking, the project was carried out to ensure the optimum level of service for travellers and drivers, at the main entrance and exit gateway to and from Athens and Greece.

In addition, the system’s interventions were a significant and necessary improvement of airport curbside operations, taking into consideration the capacity needs and the airport’s passenger traffic.

South Wing Extension project

The design and construction by mid-2019 of the 5-level, 15,000m2, South Wing Extension (SWE) of the Main Terminal Building (MTB) covered a critical increase in Extra Schengen’s (ES) operational needs due to a new European Security Regulatory Framework (EU 2017/458) enforced in 2019. The design has been awarded to the collaborating firms “A. N. Tombazis and Associates” and “AVW Architecture via an international design and management services competition, on a very tight design and construction schedule.

The South Wing Expansion was the first project where the Main Terminal Building extended beyond its original envelope. The project at its completion provided a re-assessment of  the terminal façade and morphology and provided an architectural design that enhanced the character of the entire terminal area. The aim was to produce a building that is in context to the immediate surroundings but also to set a new architectural discourse, which will inform future extensions.

The project was nominated for the Mies Van Der Rohe Awards 2022.
